MOVIES

Looper – One of the best sci-fi movies of the past decade. It’s up there with Avatar, Cloverfield, District 9 and the Star Trek (2009) reboot.

As Edward Boches correctly observed on his blog, the Dodge Ram ad was the best spot of the Super Bowl. What confuses me the most, however, is how The Richards Group, an agency located in TEXAS, of all places, created such a whitewashed commercial devoid of Mexicans, who indisputably comprise such a large part of the farming community. Anyway, people are still talking about it, and you know you’ve made it when you start getting spoofed by Funny Or Die. For some reason, I’m unable to embed the video, but you can hit the link below.

GADGETS

There are a lot of different ways you can stream content to your TV. I bought my non-techie parents a Sewell Direct SW-23000 PC to TV converter for $30 bucks that connects directly from their laptop to their TV. After a few more weeks of research I finally took the plunge and bought a Roku 2 XS 1080 Streaming Player and cut my cable. For about $95, this is a great device and any of the bad reviews on Amazon generally have to do with people not understanding that it’s a streaming device and NOT a content provider.

The setup is VERY simple; only takes a few minutes. After hooking up the Roku to a power source and your TV you’ll need to subscribe to “channels,” which are basically content providers. Most of my needs are met through Netflix and Hulu Plus (I already have paid subscriptions to both).
